Winner of the Wellcome Trust "I'm a Scientist - Get Me Out of Here" competition

Helen O'Connor has won the Wellcome Trust "I'm a Scientist - Get Me Out of Here" competition.

This is an award-winning science enrichment and engagement activity, funded by the Wellcome Trust. It’s an X Factor-style competition for scientists, where students are the judges. Scientists and students talk online, and break down barriers, have fun and learn. Students get to vote for their favourite scientist, with "evictions" occurring daily during the final week.

This year there were over 20 science zones, ranging across the science disciplines, including chemistry, physics, genetics, microbiology, energy, evolution, and a new category - sports science. Five sports scientists competed over a two week period by answering students’ questions posed online, as well as through interactive and live webchats with different schools. Some examples of the hundreds of questions Helen was asked along with her replies can be found at http://sportsj11.imascientist.org.uk/profile/helenoconnor

Helen won a £500 prize that can be used to fund educational activities. Helen will use the money to build materials for sport psychology projects that she is undertaking in South Africa.

Well done, Helen.
